Hypermobility Syndrome

What is it?

Joint hypermobility means that some or all of a person’s joints have an unusually large range of movement. Many people with joint hypermobility don’t have any problems. Those who do have joint hypermobility alongside other unpleasant symptoms such as pain and stiffness in the joints and muscles, joints that dislocate easily, fatigue, recurrent muscular injuries, digestive problems (such as constipation and IBS) and/or dizziness and fainting, are known to have joint hypermobility syndrome (JHS).

What causes hypermobility?

Joint hypermobility is often hereditary and one of the main causes is thought to be genetic changes to a protein in the body called collagen. JHS is widely thought to feature an underlying condition affecting connective tissue, called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS).

How can Enhance Motion help those with Hypermobilty disorders?

People living with JHS often benefit from a combination of controlled exercise and physiotherapy to help manage pain and make daily tasks easier. Managing JHS may also involve treating short-term injuries as they arise, which is common in those who have recurrent dislocations and sprains. Our therapists are very well versed in tailoring specific, controlled and safe strength exercises to help you manage your joint hypermobility.
